Should it be independent?
You may need an external, independent investigator if:
• the investigation concerns matters which are particularly serious, sensitive or confidential
• the people involved are senior officers of the organisation
• no suitable internal investigator is available
• an internal investigation would take up too much management time
or
• to separate the role of investigator from any disciplinary proceedings or appeal hearings
• to minimise negative effects on individuals not directly involved in the circumstances under investigation
• for the sake of credibility or public relations.
