Racial harassment
Allegations of racism by an employee against his supervisor led to an internal investigation. This then became the subject of further claims on the grounds that it was not impartial. The case seemed destined to be heard by an Employment Tribunal. Progress had been very slow. Morale in the unit concerned deteriorated, while staff turnover and absenteeism increased.
As a result of mediation, an agreement was reached which included a carefully crafted apology. A set of policy changes and management practices were implemented in the unit. These were reviewed by the mediator and the parties several weeks after the main part of the work. It was agreed that the measures were being successfully managed and the climate had radically improved.
