Substantial sums of money started to go missing from a business. Internal enquiries pointed to the Manager. He had been in post for over 20 years and was both liked and trusted. It could not be him.
But the problem remained, necessitating a formal investigation.
The investigator reviewed the internal files and then spent some time with the Manager, gently probing the situation from a number of angles. In the end, he broke down and confessed to taking the money. He felt his years of faithful service had been totally taken for granted and that he had simply helped himself to what was really his due.
At that point, the matter reverted to the Manager's boss and the HR Director for final consideration and action.
